Dice, Dilla, Pregunta Mixtape

Dice, Dilla, Pregunta

There are only a few musicians allowed to do this and since I’m posting this, I believe these cats are one of them. The Roots have churned out a plethora of emcees and Dice Raw is as good as it gets. Here’s Dice, Dilla, Pregunta mixtape. Dice abuses the covers that the Roots did of the late J Dilla’s tracks. Source / Link

Back in 2006, Inquiringmind and our friends Henri and Goodfoot (R.I.P.) were approached to see if there was any interest in putting together an event to commemorate the late and great producer, J Dilla.  Fittingly enough it was put together in conjunction with the J DIlla + New Era Cap release in Toronto.  These are some of the behind the scenes of the presentation that we put together for this here event.  Visual / Photostream

J Dilla: “Safety Dance”

J Dilla: "Safety Dance"

Stones Throw must know that summer (global warming anyone?) is around the corner because they, in conjunction with the J Dilla Estate are releasing a J Dilla serato release entitled Donut Shop due out in May, more specifically, the day after Mother’s Day. It’s comprised of two discs with six J Dilla tracks accompanied by a serato control tone, along with two donuts slipmats. Here’s a joint Stones Throw released off the project for download called “Safety Dance”. Partake.  Source Link

The Roots Cover J Dilla

The Roots Cover J Dilla

In honor of J Dilla Month and his birthday that was yesterday (he would’ve been 36) I bring to you, well really Questlove brings to you via Twitter, 11 beats the group covers from Detroit’s very own. Partake! Link -P.S. this will be my last J Dilla post this month, I don’t believe in overkill and I respect the legacy.

Jaylib vs. J Rocc

Jaylib vs. J Rocc

Last year, Stones Throw Records dubbed February J Dilla month (psst… it’s also Black History Month). Anyway, the dynamic label has released a serious mix via the third member of Jaylib, J Rocc-of the World Famous Beat Junkies. For more information on the concept and history of Jaylib click here.  Source / Link

Karriem Riggins X Steve Thundercat

Karriem Riggins X Steve Thundercat

Karriem Riggins is one of the must humble musicians/producers/emcees in the music industry. Here’s to hoping that Supreme Team album with Madlib sees the light of day. A pure student of the music, Riggins would give Questlove a run for his money (yeah I said it!). If you think I’m kidding check his Music Kaleidoscope. Anyway, during the Suite for Ma Dukes tribute last year he got the opportunity to freestyle with guitarist Steve Thundercat a student in his own right, working with the likes of Erykah Badu and Sa-Ra Creative Partners. Here’s a jam session that displays the raw talent of both respectively. Link

Shout Out To NahRight.com

Nahright (easily the best hip hop site online) plugged an old campaign of ours for a Skyzoo track that was done over a J Dilla Donut. Just want to thank Nahright for all the support and for keeping up the good work.

J Dilla X Fantastic Planet

A few months ago the big homey Paulo blogged about the ever so crazy and must watch on drugs movie entitled “Fantastic Planet“. Well what we have right here is a not so well known Jay Dee (RIP) beat mashed in with some footage from Fantastic Planet which makes way for some pretty awesome visuals. The original to this beat is Alain Goraguer - “Le Bracelet” (also sampled for Big Pun - Boomerang, Rascals - Soul Obligation) which comes way from the soundtrack to this movie. If you can get your hands on that soundtrack be sure to give it a listen lots of great music on there done by a selection of really talented french musicians in the 1970’s.

Currently In Rotation: Billy Paul - Let The Dollar Circulate

Yesterday I posed the 08 hustlers anthem; Young Jeezy - Circulate. However, today I’m posting the original hustlers anthem which is Billy Paul - Let The Dollar Circulate. This is just straight up full fledged talent, the horns on this track are NUTS! Inflation getting higher it makes it hard on the buyer, un-employement on the rise…
