Jesse Boykins III - “Prototype” (Andre 3000 Cover)

Jesse Boykins III has been one of those artists that has not been given enough credit for his efforts.  His live performances are just as good as his recorded tracks, and that’s a rare thing to come by these days.  On his newest track, Jesse finally decided to take this Andre 3000 track (a track he has been opening with for the past year) with the help of Melo-X and put his twist on it.  This is definitely a perfect song to end your summer with. Trust us. Link.

The Airplane Boys | Sleep Official Video

The Airplane Boys | Sleep Official Video

I had the chance to catch these guys at a show a few weeks back, and to say that I left impressed is an understatement. Listening to them on a track is one thing, but seeing them live is truly an experience. The beats, lyrics, band, and image are something unique. Check out the new official video from The Airplane Boys called “Sleep”, and you can catch a glimpse of what I’m talking about.

Kanye West - “Monster”

They say it’s G.O.O.D. Friday, and it certainly is.  What can I say about this track?  Truthfully, a track featuring Jay Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, & Bon Iver, says it all.  All four artists go in to make this a monster of a track, and Nicki Minaj especially goes hard to let everyone that she is a force not to be messed with.  Kanye announced yesterday that Jay and him will soon be releasing a 6 track EP appropriately named, Watch The ThroneLink

Andreya Triana - A Town Called Obselete

Andreya Triana has been slept for quite some time.  Now known for being Bonobo’s front woman, Triana has collaborated with some of the best electronic producers in the game.  Her first single, Lost Where I Belong, was blessed with a remix by Flying Lotus, which in turn opened many doors for the singer.  To keep the momentum going, much talked about post-dubstep producers, Mount Kimbie, join the club of remixers and add their downtempo flavor to Triana’s latest single, A Town Called ObseleteLink

Fat Beats Closing L.A. and NY Stores

fb

Remember that nostalgia about going into the record store and finding that old dusty record? Well, that’s all you’ll have left so hold on to it. I’m speechless but not shocked at the turn of events. I’ll let my man Amir of Waxpoetics tell you what Fat Beats meant to him.

“with great sadness I just heard that fat beats is closing it’s last two remaining stores in L.A. and NYC. Now I never worked at the store but I worked at the distribution for eight years. I’d like to think I help build the company…I mean I gave many people a chance and a distribution deal back in the days…some of ya’ll are my friends and we still connect. It’s an end of era for sure! Damn!”

In Rotation is a weekly music series where we invite our creative colleagues to share what they’re currently nodding their respective heads to.

Music selection and words by: Jake Davis

Jake Davis is the precise example of an individual that has learned to become in what today’s journalistic vernacular would be called all-platform journalist, only he’s a director. He’s been able to take that medium of expression and jump from video, to short-film, to commercials. The only missing element is that big budget feature film, but we’re sure that will take place in the near future. In the interim, check out his ear for music, it spans the spectrum, similar to his work.
